Wow, I started this discussion less than a week ago and there has been many comments and ideas. I actually have had to start writing things down as I could'nt remember them all. That is great. I think all of us are on the same page that we need to step it up a notch. That we all have the same desire to overall improve Vermont wrestling. That we all will examine what our programs are doing and see if we can make any changes that will both benefit our programs and the program in general in Vermont. I know I plan to discuss some of these things with those that make decisions in our program and maybe a couple things could be brought up at the Spring Coaches meeting.
One of the positive things about a small state, is that we should be able to implement changes easier than a big state like Mass where you have to discuss things with 150-200 schools, coaches, school boards, and Principal Associations. It may seem like a little bit of a challenge sometimes to make changes in Vermont, but can you imagine trying in Mass.
Anyway, thanks to all for all the ideas. Keep them coming if anyone has any other thoughts. I have that feeling that brighter days are coming for VT wrestling. Let us press on with that goal. Let us strive harder to make champions in our own programs and let us all take pride in our Vermont wrestlers whether they are from MAU to BF to St J to Enosburg Falls and from anywhere in between. As we all know it takes a special person to be a wrestler. We at times squabble amoung ourselves but we have that common element of wrestling that keeps us going as a wrestling family. We are like a family. We can talk a little bad amongst ourselves, but nobody else from the outside better talk about us.

Glad to hear all these discussion going on - I'm new to sport- sons in 3rd and 7th grade - 2nd year in program. Jr. High son went to "new englands" and yes, there is a difference between kids in other states and VT. Certainly, more mat time equals better wrestling. The town we moved from in MA (Franklin) four years ago now has a huge full service wrestling only facility that includes "The Takedown Lounge" for refreshments! This town took the High School States this year. Town of 30,000 people. Obviously, if you build it they will come and there must be a connection between opportunities to train and the results from all that training. Of course, we suffer from lack of general population here in VT - not that many kids - not so much dollars or involvement - but - still -I'm with those that suggest we wrestle year round - even if there are other sports they are involved with...I'd love more opportunities to wrestle here in Northern Vermont and hope that things do pick up - I'm seeing some positive things going on locally and am so glad this forum exists! Thank you all for your continued interest in this sport for our kids.

I would like to thank the people that started this website. It is a great place for us to communicate. In regards to the youth program, i personally don't care about the head and arm. WE don't teach it in our program, but our wrestlers still tend to use the move. I would rather have our kids attach the legs than the upper body when shooting in. Why i think we are behind other states, i think it is obvious. we don't have the clubs that wrestler year around. I think the only town that does is mt. anthony. We have summer clubs for high school but not for youth. i drive to smitty's barn two or three times a month so my son can have better competition. Smitty's is packed all the time. Obviously, the clubs that wrestle year around produce the champions. I would like this opportunity for vermont wrestlers. I know it takes backing and the support of people to run it, "if we build it, they will come". Congrats to Steven Rich, he was a great representative for Vermont in New Englands.

What do we currently have in VT right now as far as off season clubs that wrestlers can go to? MAU has a club. It was mentioned that there is one in Greenfield Mass. and I believe Vergennes has one. Are there any others?

MAU/Catamount in Bennington
Barre
VT Elite & Vergennes (I think that they combined and are in the Burlington area)
Nothing in the northeast or southeast that I know of.

interesting discussion. in northern/central maine we deal with all the same issues. clearly if you exclude southern nh and sw maine, all northern new england is in the same boat. maybe some collaboration would help level the playing field. having more kids, having older kids with winning experience, having the wrestling rooms open year round (with available coaches as well as kids with more experience), having more camps and clinics and competitions are all needed to make a dent. having the schools and principal assoc. putting their support and money behind wrestling also will help. i am presently trying to get a team together to go to columbus to the ohio tournament of champions. getting dual meet experience at that national level is invaluable. furthermore perhaps in that process we can meet and bring athletes, parents, and coaches who face similar trying circumstances together. we hope to charter a bus to ohio to keep costs very low. if youre not part of the solution, youre part of the problem!

I believe you mentioned earlier that your son was in 8th grade. What is the age limit at the club in Greenfield?
To all
I was wondering if we could start a location on this website where if anybody knew of any off season tournaments they could list them so everyone would know.
To Warp57
I know that MAU has been going to several off season events for years. You did such a dedicated job with the rankings, I was wondering if you had the time to take the ball and run with this. Being from MAU, you could share with us what they know about or any others you might learn of. I,m great at volunteering your time but it is something that I think would be a benefit to our VT wrestlers that are wanting to wrestle off season
thanks

I believe 69 Mustang's son is a Jr. this year @ BF.
In my opinion there is no real secrecy to how MAU operates in or out of season.
MAU has a long standing wrestling culture within its community that began years ago with Coach Armand Patanaud. Coach Legacy came in later and is mainly responsible for where MAU is today.
Consistancy within the coaching staff (have to be on the same page as the HS staff)from youth on up.... Practice, Practice, Practice and having other good kids in the room to push each other is a must. Don't be afraid of losing. Schedule the most difficult tournaments within a reasonable travel distance. Go to camps.
Summer camp list:
http://www.masswrestling.com/cms/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?184124
Coach Legacy runs one of the best camps over the summer in Bennington brining in many NCAA all-americans and nationally known clinitions and you don't have to pay $600-800 for it.
Stay with it, doesn't happen over night. Good luck.

Warp57 I was mainly interested in the tournaments MAU attends off season so others might be able to attend. Looking on the Mass website, it does not appear that there are a lot of tournaments or duals coming up. Thanks for the link on the camps.
69 mustang Thanks for your info but I was hoping several people who know throughout the State could post events as they learn of them, for example the one at Burnt Hills. I just think it would be handy since we have this website if people who were interested in going to events could just click on one location and see what was coming up
69 mustang I saw your son win JH states. Congrads, He along with several other JH wrestlers down your way won states. You guys must be doing something right down in BF.

thanks saber their are some kids that like to wrestle down here i think you are right that if somebody like warp who nose a whole lot about wrestling and whats going on around the other states, I'm not saying he would or if he even has the time but would be my choice to do it.The off season tournaments are not out yet i know that their is an iron man tournament in Natick MA but have not seen a date yet you don't have to be on a club to go to this one.
